Rick Dulaney, Yodan (4th degree black belt), is a co-founder and senior member of Grand Junction Shotokan Karate. In 1974, at the age of 14, Rick joined SKA and began practicing karate at Boise State University. Mr. Ohshima promoted him to Shodan (1st degree black belt) in 1977. Rick subsequently went on to lead the Boise State Dojo in addition to becoming a faculty member within the Physical Education Department, where he taught beginning and advanced karate classes as part of the PE Department curriculum. Mr. Dulaney joined the Fruita Dojo when he relocated to Grand Junction, Colorado in 2007. More recently, Rick was promoted to Yodan in 2013 in the presence of Mr. Ohshima, Jim Sagawa, and other top SKA seniors at the Shotokan Ohshima Dojo in Santa Barbara, California. Rick is a retired business executive and spends much of his free time exploring the back country of Colorado with his wife Chris. Rick also volunteers his time in the community when needed.
Travis Perry, Sandan (3rd degree black belt), is a co-founder and Leader of Grand Junction Shotokan. He also serves as the Director of SKA’s Intermountain Region. Travis began his training in Shotokan karate at the Fruita Dojo in 2005. He has been, and continues to be, an excellent example of how hard work and personal practice outside the dojo yields results. He was promoted to Shodan in 2007. Subsequently Travis was promoted to Sandan in 2017 by John Teramoto and other top SKA seniors after successfully completing the examination at summer special training in California. In addition to karate practice, Travis is a dedicated family man and practicing Attorney in Grand Junction, Colorado. He is also involved in numerous civic organizations.
Chris Wood, Shodan (1st degree black belt), began his journey in Shotokan-Ohshima karate in October 2013 at the age of 36. Chris became a charter member of the Grand Junction Dojo at it’s inception in January 2015 where upon he immediately assumed a dojo leadership role. Chris has been steadfast in his personal practice and support of the dojo junior members. He has always embraced special training and other SKA special events, and was promoted to Shodan in June of 2018. In his life outside the dojo, Chris is the founder & operator of Faith Roofing LLC, which operates in the Western Slope of Colorado as well as Eastern Utah. He and his wife are avid campers and enjoy time on their 4-wheelers exploring the Colorado back country.
